Autumn Term project - illuminated letters

Over the last few weeks the Bookworms have been learning about how books were made and written in the past. Many books in years gone by had some very fancy letters at the beginning of each chapter, these letter are called 'illuminated' letters. The bookworms then had a go at designing their own illuminated letter, which we are now transferring onto good quality art paper. The letters the children are illuminating are the beginning of a quote they chose, so once their illuminated letter is finished they will have a go at writing their quote using calligraphy or perhaps even a quill and ink! The Bookworms are so enthusiastic and are producing beautiful work!

Here are two examples of the wonderful illuminated letters the children are working on.

Writing our quotes in a calligraphy style

Most of the Bookworms have finished their illuminated letters and they are absolutely beautiful! Good work Bookwormers.

The children are now writing the rest of their quote in a calligraphy style, this takes time and hard work but will be worth it in the end. Mrs Swift, Mrs Burkill and Miss Beecher are really looking forward to seeing the finished products.
